'Ghilli' re-release: Producer A. M. Rathnam recalls how he boarded the 'Thalapathy' Vijay film, says "I told them that it won't work out in Tamil" (EXCLUSIVE)
By Vivek Raj | Galatta | 03:49 PM
'Tis the season of re-releases and Tamil cinema fans are set to take their celebrations a notch higher with 'Thalapathy' Vijay's mega-blockbuster Ghilli scheduled to open in cinemas starting April 20. The romantic sports action film released in 2004 directed by blockbuster Tamil filmmaker Dharani also starred Trisha Krishnan as the female lead and Prakash Raj as the antagonist, with Ashish Vidyarthi, Dhamu, Mayilsamy and Janaki Sabesh playing supporting roles, and features chart-topping hit songs and a power-packed background score composed by Vidyasagar. With only a few days left for Ghilli's re-release, producer A. M. Rathnam has now in an exclusive interview with Galatta opened up on how he boarded the 'Thalapathy' Vijay film.
Ghilli, a remake of the Telugu film Okkadu (2003) starring Mahesh Babu, Bhumika Chawla, and Prakash Raj, went on to become a massive box office success running in theatres for more than 200 days at the time. Speaking about Ghilli, A. M. Rathnam said that he first received a call from Vijay to remake Okkadu in Tamil. The hit producer said, "I wasn't the first person to watch this film (Okkadu). Vijay sir and his father watched it first. After watching the film, they called me. I told them that I hadn't watched it yet. So, after they watched it, they felt it's costly and that A. M. Rathnam can produce it." He added, "I told them that it won't work out in Tamil because it's a costly film. However, I said I'll produce the film, but it'll workout if we can do two films. If this film turns out to be a hit, its benefits will go to the people in the next film. But, they already had a commitment to do another film and that was Madhurey. Only after this is done could he board the next project. And, that is how we began the film."
