Director Mani Ratnam's dream project Ponniyin Selvan part 1 hit the theatres on September 30 and became a huge success. The film was loved by the fans and now they cannot wait for part 2 to release. The film's storyline ended on a cliffhanger which has kept the audience waiting for more. The first part of Ponniyin Selvan collected over Rs 450 crore worldwide and is still continuing its run in selected theatres across the globe. and Now, all eyes are on the film's second part.

Coming to that, National Award winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan recently sat down with politician-actor-producer Udhayanidhi Stalin for an exclusive interview for our Galatta Plus channel. During this session, Rangan asks him why the release dates of films are not usually announced in advance here in the Tamil film industry like it is announced in Bollywood. Udhayanidhi says that though it does not occur as frequently as it does in Bollywood, they are announced prior when it comes to big movie releases. It is during this time that he gives an example of Ponniyin Selvan 2 and reveals that it will release on 28 April 2023.
The first installment of the epic historical drama Ponniyin Selvan was produced by Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under the banners of Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions respectively and is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name. The film boasts a stellar ensemble cast comprising of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rashin Rahman, and R. Parthiban.
The music for Ponniyin Selvan was composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography by Ravi Varman, editing by A. Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani. It received acclaim from film critics, who praised the direction, cast performances, musical score, visuals, and faithfulness to the novel. It broke several box-office records and grossed over Rs. 500 crores.
