Leading Tamil actress Jyotika made a big comeback to Bollywood a little while back in the supernatural horror film Shaitaan alongside Ajay Devgn and Madhavan under Vikas Bahl's direction. Having garnered a huge fan following during the course of her two-decade film journey and establishing herself to be one of the most sought after names in the industry, Jyotika, whose half-sister is actress-politician Nagma, recently sat down with Galatta India's Nayandeep Rakshit to talk about how she debuted in Tamil cinema while also explaining how Vaalee (1999) alongside Ajith Kumar under SJ Suryah's direction was not her first Tamil film.
Speaking about debuting in Tamil cinema, Jyotika explained, "I started with a Hindi film. Doli Saja Ke Rakhna with Mr. Priyadarshan and Akshaye Khanna. That bombed. That was the end of Hindi because I think your first film has to run here. I mean, those days. Back then. And, there was a bandwagon of girls then when I had come in. We had Preity Zinta and we had a lot of girls. Lot of them. 10 to 15 of them. So, the first film had to run. And then, of course, because my sister also worked down South, and we shot Doli Saja Ke Rakhna in Chennai." She further stated, "So, what happened was, on the set, I had a very good director Mr. Vasanth. He came and he just signed me for a good subject. And, I signed on that film. So, that was undercurrent happening with this. And then, this didn't take off and that did. So, the diversion and the journey. And, that film was actually not Vaalee. My first film was with Suriya, my husband, and Vaalee just happened to release before that. Workwise my first film was with my husband Suriya called Poovellam Kettuppar. It was something on the lines of Saudagar where they interchange homes to go and convince the parents for marriage. And, yeah, I was 17 then."
