Speaking about her diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, DD stated, "There was a pain in the joint in one of my legs and I underwent surgery, which went wrong. In order to rectify the mistake in that surgery, I had to undergo another surgery. And then, there was a second part to that surgery and I had to do the third surgery. By the time all this was done, an autoimmune condition had developed in me." She added, "So, the autoimmune condition that developed in me was rheumatoid arthritis in my big joints. We don't know why an autoimmune condition comes. It just happens. But, once an autoimmune condition is developed in you, it will change your life completely."
Explaining how an autoimmune condition will make a person question their health, DD said, "The first few years, you'll be asking yourself why this happened with you. So many questions will be circling inside you and there will come a point where you will accept it. You'll tell yourself that this is you and you will look for ways to build yourself from thereon. There will be times when some people will tell you that there's no use for you anymore. And, you'll think that you collaborated with them for so many years and when it comes to the point where you can't work together again, there will be a bitter feeling. To not let that bitter feeling get built up and without vilifying those on the other end..." Upon being asked whether such an incident occurred, she added, "Yes, I'm not able to do a show on Vijay TV anymore. When there's no show without standing up, then we have to understand their difficulty in this context as well and I had to shift my mindset and build myself from that point on. I began thinking about how to build a fort with the problem in my leg without turning bitter. These experiences will make you bitter."
Opening up on the ordeals she has had to endure over the years due to her health condition, DD explained, "I first experienced pain in my leg in 2013. It's been nearly 10 years now and I would have slept without any pain on perhaps ten days. Every day there will be pain. Why pain? Nobody knows. So many questions came to my mind about how to make the pain go away." She continued, "When I travel, I used to move around in a wheelchair along with a [walking] stick for assistance. I can stand, but not for a long time. I can stand for 2-3 minutes. The good thing that has come out of all of this is that I'm doing less anchoring nowadays and have begun acting since a shot will require me to stand only for 2-3 minutes. When you're not in front of the camera, you hold on to the stick."
