Tamil actor Vijay paid his last respects to 'Captain' Vijayakanth's mortal remains on Thursday night, December 28, at the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party office in Chennai. The Tamil superstar was seen getting emotional and gazing at the DMDK founder through the glass casket while holding back his tears. Vijay, who looked quite exhausted and shocked by Vijayakanth's passing away, was seen consoling the late actor-politician's wife and current DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth.
Vijay or 'Thalapathy', as he is fondly addressed by his fans, shared a close, personal relationship with Vijayakanth after he played an instrumental role during the early stages of his career in Tamil cinema having acted alongside the actor-politician in his second film as a hero, Sendhoorapandi (1993), directed by his father S. A. Chandrasekhar. Fans will know that Vijayakanth and S. A. Chandrasekhar were also good friends having collaborated in several notable films among which included Sattam Oru Iruttarai (1981), which established him as a major commercial star in Tamil cinema.
'Captain' Vijayakanth passed away on December 28 after he was admitted to the MIOT Hospital in the city on Tuesday and was put on ventilatory support because of pneumonia. He was 71. The news of the late Tamil cinema stalwart's death was announced by the hospital authorities in an official medical bulletin earlier in the day that read, " 'Captain' Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023." Vijayakanth's mortal remains have been taken to Island Grounds in the city on Friday, December 29, and will kept for the public to pay their last respects till 1 p.m. after which the funeral ceremony is scheduled to take place at 4.45 p.m.
