During an excluding interview with Galatta Media, the National award winning art director Thota Tharani shared some exciting details about the making of Ponniyin Selvan 2. The art director also shared about the making process of the throne of the Chola empire. Speaking about the other sets, Thota Tharani said “If we do something and Mani sir likes it then he will be very happy about it. He will be very thrilled, if I do some sketches and show them to him at that time. What happened in Bangkok was, we saw everything for around 15 days and within one and a half hour to one hour, in which place, what we should do was all sketched and given to him. He was very thrilled."
When asked about making the boats and ships that were seen in the climax portions of Ponniyin Selvan: 1. Thota Tharani said “When Mani sir was speaking about the boat, he would say it should be like this." The set director then said he drew inspiration from Mayabazar movie that he has seen. "He (Mani Ratnam) shows photographs of many of the boats. First canoe boat, then a yacht and other ones, ever from other countries, then we studied it. In the book, they would have said more about a European construction boat. But, I wanted to break that and left it behind. Then wanted a logo and we were thinking about where would we place it. Then, we thought if we kept the logo at the front of the ship it will be good like the tiger face. Like that, we researched and did it one by one. That the job, there is no greatness in this, we are doing our job."
