Visaranai fame Auto Chandran helps woman deliver a baby on the road during lockdown
Writer M.Chandrakumar, known to avid Tamil literary readers as 'Auto' Chandran, helped a 26-year-old woman deliver her baby in Coimbatore on the roadside during the lockdown. 'Auto' Chandran, whose popular Tamil novel, Lock Up, served as the inspiration for National Award-winning Tamil director Vetri Maaran's critically-acclaimed 2016 film, Visaranai, had reached the spot where the woman from Odisha was already in labor pain and with the assistance of an emergency medical technician (EMT) helped her deliver a baby boy.
Chandran, who has authored eight novels to date, is said to have not wasted any time in helping the young pregnant woman in delivering the baby when a few people including women stood watching with some even recording the happenings. Later, he said, he rushed to the spot where the woman was in labour pain and made her sit on the ground knowing she was going to deliver the baby. He adds that he held the baby once it had come out without much difficulty and then held the newborn upside down in an effort to make the child cry. He explained his reason for doing so as it was one among the many procedures old-timers used to follow to help pregnant women during the time of their delivery.
At the CMCH, the Dean (in-charge) P. Kalidas stated that the health condition of both the mother and child is stable with the placenta cord removed once they were brought inside the hospital. Auto Chandran's daughter too explained in detail on Facebook as to how her father assisted in the birth of the newborn while also sharing pictures and videos of the incident. Check them out below:
