National Award-winning Tamil actor 'Chiyaan' Vikram's Thangalaan directed by acclaimed filmmaker Pa. Ranjith is gearing up for a huge worldwide theatrical release starting January 26, 2024. The highly-anticipated period action film set during the pre-Independence era amidst the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) backdrop also stars Malayalam actress Parvathy Thiruvothu, Master heroine Malavika Mohanan, Pasupathy, among others in key roles, including English actor Daniel Caltagirone playing the antagonist, with music composed by National Award winner G. V. Prakash Kumar. With post-production works currently underway on Thangalaan ahead of its release early next year, producer K. E. Gnanavel Raja sat down with Galatta to talk about the plan to send the ambitious film to the Oscars and film festivals, while also explaining Vikram's massive efforts for his role and performance.
Speaking about Thangalaan and his belief in director Pa. Ranjith, including Vikram's performance, Gnanavel Raja said, "I don't know the stories of any of my films. I'm going forward with my belief in the director. The one thing I know is that it's a period film. So, the first big surprise for me is Vikram sir's hard work and toil because it takes a lot of guts to wear that costume as he has to transform for his role. Ranjith sir had given photos for references to showcase the lifestyle and the attire that the people in those days used to wear. But, beyond that, he did thorough homework and tried different styles, which was a surprise even for Ranjith sir, and this shows that he has such big dedication and sincerity [for his role]. I feel that he has invested his effort in the right film. He's known for walking the extra mile for all his films, but I feel has invested his hard work in the right proportion this time and this film will definitely be a big milestone in his career."
Producer K. E. Gnanavel Raja further spoke about the plan to put Thangalaan in contention for the Oscars and said, "We will be sending the film to all the film festivals. Vikram sir will be busy in all the film festivals next year because I believe all the awards will come his way. Be it Ranjith, all the craft, the music, camera work, and the other artistes, Parvathy, and the other heroine (Malavika Mohanan), Pasupathy sir, the stunt and the art departments, all of them worked hard and in a unique and beautiful manner."
