One issue that has set social media one fire over the past week has been the Madras High Court order against actor Vijay regarding his Rolls Royce Ghost car's entry tax appeal for which he had been asked to pay a sum of Rs. 1 lakh as a fine towards the Tamil Nadu COVID-19 relief fund. In 2012, Vijay had filed a petition when he purchased the luxury vehicle and had paid his full lifetime tax, with the judgment going on to be stated by many as tax evasion by the actor. Now, Vijay is filing his appeal against the entry tax fine of Rs. 1 lakh imposed for the import of his luxury Rolls Royce Ghost Car in 2012 for which he has been seeking a tax exemption. The Tamil superstar has decided to file an appeal at the High Court requesting for the case to proceed forward without the recently issued judgment report. The appeal will be presented to a two-judge bench composed of Justice Sundaresh and Justice Manjula on Monday.
The judgment delivered by Justice S.M. Subramaniam of the Madras High Court on Tuesday has since been widely discussed with many taking to social media to state that Vijay had been involved in tax evasion. However, fans soon shared receipts of the actor having paid his full lifetime tax, including producing up-to-date necessary documents. His legal counsel S. Kumaresan told a leading Tamil news channel that the issue was not about tax evasion. He had stated that they had approached the court for the registration as there was no proper clarity on whether the tax is to be paid or not. Vijay's lawyer said that the court had asked the actor to register for 20% of the payment, which also had been obliged and the judgment has only come out recently. He cited that they were going to file the appeal against a few points in the order as there has been a lot of debate that the issue was about tax evasion and is in turn affecting Vijay's name.
The judge in his order had come down heavily on Vijay saying, "In the State of Tamil Nadu, cine heroes have risen as rulers of the State and therefore, the people are under the impression that they are real heroes. Thus, they are not expected to behave like reel heroes. Tax evasion is to be construed as an anti-national habit, attitude and mindset and unconstitutional. These actors portray themselves as champions of social justice. Their movies are against corrupt activities in the society. But, they are evading tax and acting in a manner which is not in consonance with the provisions of the Statutes." After the judgment, many Vijay fans took to social media to point out that his request for tax exemption had been misinterpreted, while also providing Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar's name as a reference as he too had earlier sought the same for his Ferrari car, which was granted.
