Earlier in the day, Vijayakanth's political party, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, had issued a statement informing cadre and fans that the toes on his feet had been amputated due to a diabetes problem that had been causing him trouble for years. The veteran actor-politician's health condition is carefully being monitored, with reports stating that he will be in the hospital for a couple of more days after which he will be discharged. The DMDK in their statement further urged office bearers, supporters, and the public to not believe in any rumors or misleading statements about Vijayakanth's health that were circulating on social media.

Lovingly called by fans as 'Captain', Vijayakanth has visited the hospital over the years on a frequent basis for medical checkups and had taken a backseat in the political arena due to his health issues. He has been seen on the big screen only on a couple of occasions in the last decade - Virudhagiri (2010), which he directed, followed by making a cameo appearance in his son Shanmuga Pandian's acting debut Sagaptham (2015). Reports state that Vijayakanth will be seen in a crucial role in the upcoming Vijay Antony and Sarathkumar-starrer Mazhai Pidikatha Manithan under Goli Soda and 10 Endrathukulla fame Vijay Milton's direction.
