St. Thomas planned for 2010 release

It is believed that St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, travelled to India to spread the message of Jesus after the death and resurrection of Jesus in the first century AD. According to Indian Christian tradition, Thomas landed in Kodungallur, Kerala in 52 AD. He was killed by people who opposed his activities in India and was cremated in a hillock now called St. Thomas Mount, Chennai in 72 AD. However, much mystery surrounds in his time in India.

Now, a Chennai-based trust, Saint Thomas Apostle of India, is going to produce a movie on the life of St. Thomas on a whopping budget of 50 crore. This big project will involve about 25 foreign and local artistes and many Hollywood actors. News reports indicate that Hollywood actor James Caviezel (The Passion of The Christ) might play the role of Christ.

Superstar Rajinikanth is likely to play the role of Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar, who is said to have met St. Thomas in his lifetime. Popular Tamil actors like Vijay, Vikram, Ajith and his wife Shalini will also appear in the film.

Shooting of the film will start by January 2009 at locations in Chennai, Idukki, Munnar and some foreign locales. This film will be made in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi and many foreign languages. Proceeds from the film will go to an education fund set up by the Catholic Archdiocese of Mylapore. The movie is expected to hit theaters by 2010.
