SK21 was announced in January 2022 to be produced by 'Ulaganaayagan' Kamal Haasan under his banner Raaj Kamal Films International. It is to be directed by Rajkumar Periyasamy who helmed the film Rangoon with Gauthan Karthick as a lead. The film is the 51st project of the production house and they have collaborated with Sony Pictures Films India. The leading actor Shivakarthikeyan has shared a new picture with director Rajkumar Periyasamy. The pics show the director and actor in a candid conversation in what looks like a physical training gym. The actor has shared the photos with the caption “A Wiseman once said: “Make friends who force you to level up”.

The pictures have become viral on social media as Sivakarthikeyan has stated it will be a level-up for him. Reports stated that the pre-production work of the film tentatively titles SK21 is happening at a brisk pace and the plot of the film reportedly revolves around an army officer. There were speculations that G.V.Praksah Kumar will compose music for the film and it will mark the first collaboration between the actor and the National Award-winning composer. The actor also has another massive film in like titled Ayalaan, that said to be Sci-fi that directed by R Ravikumar. Recently, it was also stated that discussions are happening for a A.R. Murugadoss - Sivakarthikeyan collaboration.
