Shazam! Fury of the Gods is an upcoming superhero film based on the DC Comics character Shazam. Produced by New Line Cinema, DC Films, and The Safran Company, and set for distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is intended to be the sequel to 2019's Shazam! and to serve as the 12th film in the DCEU (DC Extended Universe). It is directed by David F. Sandberg from a screenplay by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan. The film will star Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Rachel Zegler, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Meagan Good, Lucy Liu, Djimon Hounsou, and Helen Mirren. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is scheduled to be released theatrically on 21 December 2022.
In the film, the story of teenager Billy Batson continues who, upon reciting the magic word SHAZAM, transforms into his adult superhero alter ego, Shazam, to fight the daughters of Atlas. During the San Diego Comic-Con of 2022, the makers of the film dropped the first official trailer for the world to see.
The trailer gives us a glimpse of Shazam/Billy Batson going through a sort of existential crisis doubting his purpose as a superhero when heroes like The Flash, Aquaman, and Batman exist, who are making a bigger contribution to society than him and therefore resulting to him feeling like a fraud. The new villain in this story is a powerful goddess played by none other than Helen Mirren who is also joined by Lucy Liu. Also, there is a very big dragon creature causing a ruckus. The new trailer looks to capitalize on the familial bonds that were so strongly established in the first film, which was a massive part of the appeal. The villains don't seem quite as menacing, but this is still an early look, so it's possible they raise the stakes in the actual film.
