Acclaimed filmmaker-actor Sasikumar recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of the blockbuster Subramaniapuram (2008), his directorial debut, which continues to enjoy a massive cult status among Tamil cinema fans. The period action film also saw him sharing screen space with Jai, Swathi Reddy, Samuthirakani, Ganja Karuppu among others, and featured smash hit songs and a powerful background score composed by James Vasanthan. With the 15 years of Subramaniapuram celebrations getting a big response on social media, Sasikumar sat down for a one-on-one conversation with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, where the duo discussed various interesting aspects about the film and why Swathi's character was not killed off during the climax.
Fans will know that Swathi's character played a pivotal role in the Subramaniapuram climax where Thulasi shifts to her family's side leaving her lover Jai as Azhagar getting slain at the hands of henchmen, with many labeling it an act of betrayal. Soon after the film's release and to date, many have queried Sasikumar as to why Swathi's character wasn't killed off as was hinted in the trailer. Addressing the long-standing debate about Swathi's fate in the Subramaniapuram climax, Sasikumar said, "After including the shot where it's suggested that Swathi might get killed, many are still asking whether we shot the scene and removed it. In the trailer, it's shown like she's being chased. The truth is we simply shot it and included it in the trailer. We didn't use it in the film. I didn't kill her character Thulasi. I didn't feel like killing her. I left it to the audience's interpretation. Whether you want to forgive and let her go or if you feel like killing her, get it done within your mind. You kill her. The question about why she wasn't killed in the film is what I wanted. If I killed the character, I'll be asked why did I do that. Some will say she was innocent and did what she did only for her family. So, I left it to the audience to decide her fate."
