Oppenheimer is an upcoming biographical film written and directed by Christopher Nolan, based on American Prometheus, a biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The film is a co-production between Syncopy Inc. and Atlas Entertainment, with Nolan producing the film alongside Emma Thomas and Charles Roven. Cillian Murphy stars in the eponymous role as Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who is among those credited with being the father of the atomic bomb for his role in the Manhattan Project — the World War II undertaking that developed the first nuclear weapons. Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh also lead the ensemble cast.
The makers of the film just recently revealed the official announcement trailer of this highly anticipated film. The clip features a haunting voiceover from the cast of the film as flames cover up the background and then we finally cut to Cillian Murphy as J Robert Oppenheimer. The trailer includes black-and-white shots of Murphy's Oppenheimer, giving a sense of what will be a very different visual palette for the director. On top of all that, the live announcement video allows for a running countdown to the movie's release that runs down to the millisecond.
Oppenheimer is scheduled to be released theatrically on 21 July 2023 by Universal Pictures. It is Nolan's first film not to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures since Memento (2000), due to disagreements arising from the studio's simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max release strategy for their 2021 slate.
