Fans of Marvel films just keep getting plenty of reasons to be happy and have quite a lot to look forward in the days and years ahead. As Marvel Studios went on to cement their place last year with Avengers: Endgame as the studio behind highest-grossing film of all time in the world, the next big film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, will be coming out in theatres in India on April 30. That said, a few Marvel properties are already in development in Sony's Marvel Universe among which is the upcoming superhero film, Morbius, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The plans for a new shared universe of films related to Marvel properties inspired by Spider-Man characters kicked off with Venom in 2018 after which Sony had revealed they were developing a project based on the Marvel anti-hero character, Morbius.
Being produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel Entertainment and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, Morbius is intended to be the second film in Sony's Marvel Universe after Venom and has been directed by Daniel Espinosa. Based on a script written by Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway with Jared Leto in the titular role alongside Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson, the film has been announced for a worldwide release this summer on July 31 with an intense and thrilling trailer for Morbius now being released.
Among the several notable big USPs in the Morbius trailer, we get to see Jared Leto’s Dr. Michael Morbius running into Michael Keaton, who fans will know played the super-villain character, Adrian Toomes/The Vulture, in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Although he isn't revealed to be Adrian Toomes/The Vulture in the trailer, it is can be assumed that the character is here in Morbius as well. If this indeed turns out to be true, it is safe bet to conclude that Morbius as well is set in the same universe as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and, the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe.
One other big clue about how Morbius is likely appearing in the MCU is towards the middle of the trailer, when Leto's Michael Morbius is seen walking past Spider-Man poster on the sidewalk of a wall with the word “murderer” plastered across it. Although the Spidey suit in the poster isn't exactly based on any of Tom Holland's iterations in either Spider-Man: Homecoming or Spider-Man: Far From Home, it resembles the promotional art work of Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4 video game.
Based on the various Easter eggs and hints dropped in this first Morbius trailer, we can assume that the events in the upcoming film are set sometime probably after Spider-Man: Far From Home, which showed Tom Holland as the webslinger getting blamed for Mysterio’s (Jake Gyllenhal) drone attacks. The guessing game will continue until the next trailer arrives and when the film hit theatres later this July.
