One of the few films that went on to achieve cult status within days of its release was the ‘Makkal’ Selvan’ Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha starrer, 96, directed by C. Premkumar under the Madras Enterprises banner with music by Govind Vasantha. With critical and commercial acclaim following suit for the romantic drama, there have been talks since its release for remakes in other languages.
Recently, the Kannada remake of 96 was officially announced under the title 99 with ‘Golden Star’ Ganesh and Bhavana reprising Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha’s roles respectively.
That said, the Telugu remake of 96 too has been under a lot of discussion with Engeyum Eppodhum fame Sharwanand said to be cast for Vijay Sethupathi’s role. In the midst of this, there have been reports now stating Samantha, who has tasted massive successes in 2017 including the blockbuster Vijay starrer, Mersal, and this year is apparently the main contender for the female lead role played by Trisha in the Tamil original. As of now, no official word has come out yet and an announcement can be expected anytime in the days ahead.
