Recently, a devastating earthquake of a very high magnitude of 8.7 on the Richter scale, rocked Indonesia, and many mild tremors rocked other parts of the world including a lot of cities in India. Chennai was one of the Indian cities that experienced many mild tremors too. An urgent Tsunami warning was also issued to 27 countries, including India. Kamal, a legend of Indian cinema, didn't even know of the tremors until quite a while after it happened, as he was onboard a super-luxurious US Naval ship, at the time of the earthquake.
When the tremors hit, Kamal was enjoying a meal hosted for him aboard the USS Carl Vinson, as a guest of the US government. This makes Kamal the first Indian actor to board an American ship, as a special invitee of the US!
Talking about his experience, Kamal says, "And what timing. There I was on the American carrier in the Bay of Bengal, 200 miles off the coast of Chennai, completely oblivious to the earthquake and the Tsunami warning." It seems that Kamal's American hosts ensured that news of the Tsunami warnings did not reach Kamal's ears. Kamal says that he came to know of the earthquake and the Tsunami warnings, only after he flew back to Chennai, from the ship. Kamal says, "I believe they kept getting intermittent warnings, but the ship's Admiral and the rest of the staff made sure I was focused on the visit, rather than getting into alarming digressions."
Kamal's ties with the US seem to be growing stronger ever since he started Vishwaroopam, a major part of which was shot in different parts of the US!
