Iconic Hollywood filmmaker James Cameron created history well over a decade ago in 2009 with his Avatar, which went on to become the highest-grossing film of all-time earning more than $2.9 billion at the global office. A decade later, the sequel to the epic science-fiction film, Avatar: The Way of Water, released in 2022, with its striking visuals, groundbreaking CGI, and stunning cinematography along with seamless motion picture technology has cemented itself as the third highest-grossing film of all-time with over $2.3 billion, leaving audiences wanting for more.
With Avatar: The Way of Water ending on a high note, it looks like the third installment tentatively titled Avatar 3 is now getting postponed, as per a shake-up in Disney's theatrical release schedule. Earlier, Avatar 3 was announced to come out in theatres worldwide on December 20, 2024, with Disney now pushing the release to well over a year to December 19, 2025. There's more disappointment for fans up ahead as Disney has also revealed new release plans for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. While Avatar 4 was originally slated to be launched into cinemas on December 18, 2026, it has now been revealed that the film will instead be coming out on December 21, 2029. Likewise, there's a three-year pushback for Avatar 5 from its December 22, 2028, release plans as it will splash on the big screen in the next decade on December 19, 2031.
Although the news of the Avatar sequels getting delayed will come as a big blow, the big takeaway from all this will be that there will be a significant advancement in technology for James Cameron and his team to present Pandora with more grandeur. No reasons have been given yet by Disney for the delays in the Avatar sequels. The decision to push the release dates of the future Avatar films has come amid the ongoing strike by Hollywood writers, which has subsequently led to the temporary shutdown of several productions.
