Tamil filmmaker Arun Matheswaran's third directorial, the highly-anticipated Captain Miller, starring two-time National Award-winning actor Dhanush and featuring music composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar is gearing up for a grand Pongal release on January 12. With less than a week left for Captain Miller to open in cinemas worldwide, Arun Matheswaran sat down for a one-on-one conversation with National Award-winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan, the Editor-in-Chief of Galatta Plus, to talk about the period action drama, while also explaining how having Dhanush as the hero is a big advantage.
Arun Matheswaran said, "The way I prepared for the film and having a big star like Dhanush on board... if I think about it too much, I'll get into a pressure space. I made my first two films (Rocky, Saani Kaayidham) with an attitude of whoever wants to like them [can watch], but this has to appeal to everyone. And, when you have a big superstar like Dhanush, it has to appeal to his fans. But, I wrote a story and this story by default, it needed its economics since it's a period film. And, at that juncture, you need a big star to bring in that money. So, when you have a star like Dhanush, the big advantage with him is that he makes films that are grounded like Asuran or Karnan, and not over the top." He further stated, "It was much easier for me with Dhanush in the transition to making a big film. We didn't make this film diving in deep into that commercial zone. Right from T. G. Thyagarajan sir, Sathya Jyothi Films, Dhanush, and everyone involved in the film, we knew the space of this film and the economics that needs to be brought, including the factors to bring in the money."
