Released in 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez among others in lead roles still reigns at the top as the highest-grossing film of all time with over $2.7 billion in worldwide box office collections.
With James Cameron since then announcing four sequels and Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 officially being greenlit with release dates, expectations are already paramount for the second installment coming out on December 18, 2020 and the third film hitting theatres on December 17, 2021.
Meanwhile, a highly anticipated film, the third installment in the Sherlock Holmes franchise tentatively titled Sherlock Holmes 3 will see Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law reprise their roles, when it will go up against Avatar 3 on December 22, 2021.

Initially planned to come out as a Christmas release in 2020, Sherlock Holmes 3 was announced to come out as competition to Avatar 2, but has now been changed to December 2021.
The upcoming Sherlock Holmes film will be hitting screens almost a decade after the previous flick, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, under Guy Ritchie’s direction came out in theatres in December 2011 and will no doubt be an interesting battle at the box office in December 2021.
