Asianet buys English channel and newspaper
Asianet News, a Kerala-based regional news channel owned by Asianet Communications Ltd., one of the leading TV channel companies in Kerala, is set to acquire an Indian English news channel and a vernacular newspaper in South India, a report said. The cost of both deals is expected to be nearly Rs. 200 crores.
According to sources, Asianet News is at the moment in an advanced stage of negotiations with two English news channels based in Mumbai and New Delhi. However, Asianet has not yet commented on this.
Asianet, a Rs. 250-crore group controlled by MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has seven television channels in three regional languages. In addition to these general entertainment channels, it has two FM radio stations in Trissur and Kannur. Asianet News also runs three round-the-clock news channels in Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu.
