Blockbuster director A. R. Murugadoss has announced his next big film titled 1947 August 16, a period saga, and will be directed by his long-time former associate NS Ponkumar. The hit filmmaker took to social media to reveal that the upcoming film will be jointly produced by him, Om Prakash Bhatt, and Narsiram Choudhary under their A. R. Murugadoss Productions, Purple Bull Entertainment, and God Bless Entertainment banners, while Aditya Joshi is the co-producer. Shot in locations across Tamil Nadu, 1947 August 16 stars Gautham Karthik in the lead role, while newcomer Revathy is the female lead, with the film currently in post-production stages.

A. R. Murugadoss released the first look of 1947 August 16 on Wednesday, which shows Gautham Karthik clad in traditional veshti alongside countless people holding pots and is set in the Independence era. Sharing the poster, the filmmaker tweeted, "My next production venture #1947August16. Great privilege in bringing lots of young talents into this wonderful project. All the best guys. Let’s rock it!" 1947 August 16 is Murugadoss’ sixth production venture after he earlier produced films like Engaeyum Eppothum (2011), Vathikuchi (2013), Raja Rani (2013), Maan Karate (2014), and 10 Endrathukulla (2015). On the directorial front, A. R. Murugadoss’ last big film was Darbar starring 'Superstar' Rajinikanth and the filmmaker is yet to announce his next project, with reports stating that he has been working on a script for a fantasy venture, while some others have said that he might be collaborating with 'Chiyaan' Vikram for a project under the Sun Pictures banner. No official word has come out yet in regard to both the said speculated projects and all sights are set on Murugadoss to come out with a statement about his next big film.
