34-year-old Lucknow man with HIV passes coronavirus treatment in six days

A 34-year-old man with HIV/AIDS was discharged on Monday evening after being declared to be free of any coronavirus symptoms in a span of just six days during his treatment at the King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Uttar Pradesh. Doctors at the hospital have advised the individual to remain in home quarantine for a period of 14 days and return for a follow up upon its completion.

Professor MLB Bhatt, Vice-Chancellor, KGMU, in a statement to the press said, "The man was returning to his native place in Gonda from New Delhi when he met with a road accident and sustained severe head injury. When he was admitted, the head injury was so severe that he lost control over himself,". Upon admission, the man had tested positive for coronavirus and informed the staff that he was undergoing treatment for HIV as well. Mr. Bhatt added, "In the first-of-its-kind case, we could complete his treatment in six days. The patient has been discharged from the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH), where we treat coronavirus patients,".

Dr D Himanshu, senior faculty, medicine department, who as well is treating coronavirus patients at KGMU said, "We treated the patient maintaining protocol,". The man was discharged after two consecutive test reports came negative in 24 hours time. Mr. Bhatt then stated, "The recovery is satisfactory for us as we could treat him and declare him infection free in six days. This also shows dedication by our medical team,".

Prof SN Sankhwar, Chief Medical Superintendent, KGMU too shared his opinion on the treatment administered to the individual saying, "Among coronavirus patients admitted with co-morbidity, we had discharged one who was earlier treated for cancer at our institute. There are a number of others with diabetes or chronic respiratory illness we treated and discharged,".
