Actor Suriya, who achieved great international recognition with his recent films Soorarai Pottru and Jai Bhim, has recently become the first south Indian actor to be invited to the Oscars committee. The two films have propelled the actor to great heights. This is a phenomenal honor for the actor and a very proud moment for the Tamil Film Industry.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released its list of 397 artists invited to the Academy’s Class of 2022 on Tuesday, which included Suriya's name. With this, Suriya is now the first Tamil actor to be invited to join the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He will be part of the actor's branch of the Oscars committee and will be responsible for nominating actors for the four acting categories - Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended invitations to 397 distinguished artists and executives to join the organization in 2022. Membership selection is based on professional qualifications, with an ongoing commitment to representation, inclusion, and equity. This year's class of invitees includes 71 Oscar nominees, including 15 winners. The only other Indian actor apart from Suriya on the list is Kajol. Filmmaker Reema Kagti, known for Gold and Made in Heaven among other projects, has also been invited.
Suriya was last seen in Lokesh Kanagaraj's Vikram in an unforgettable cameo appearance as the role of the ruthless and cold-blooded killer Rolex. He will also be seen in another cameo appearance in R. Madhavan's Rocketry: The Nambi Effect. He is currently shooting for a film with Bala, which will mark their reunion after two decades as the two have previously collaborated in 2003's Pithamagan. He also has the film Vaadivaasal in his kitty which is directed by Vetrimaaran.
