Suriya ended 2020 on a high note, with his Soorarai Pottru receiving universal acclaim, while he also completed shooting for Mani Ratnam's anthology film titled Navarasa directed by Gautham Menon, which will stream on Netflix. In that light, he was also announced by blockbuster production house Sun Pictures for their next, that has since been tentatively titled as Suriya 40. Director Pandiraj had been revealed to be joining Suriya, with the filmmaker on the occasion of New Year dropping a massive update saying the shooting on Suriya 40 will begin in February in another 2-3 weeks as the team is finalizing on two important characters for the film.

Director Pandiraj further revealed on his Twitter page that updates on Suriya 40 will be given for sure, while extending his New Year wishes and saying the year ahead is going to be a great one for everyone. Concluding his statement, the Namma Veettu Pillai director included a knife emoji in his tweet and added that there will be "sambhavangal" in the coming weeks from the film, hinting at the possibility of Suriya 40's title. The upcoming film will mark the second occasion the two are collaborating after Suriya produced Kadaikutty Singam under his 2D Entertainment banner featuring his brother Karthi in the lead role. There were speculations that South Indian sensation Rashmika Mandanna was being eyed to play the female lead in Suriya 40, including several other rumors on the film's casting. However, Pandiraj was quick to issue a statement last year requesting fans not to believe in any of the cast and crew rumors that were doing the rounds online. He informed fans that Sun Pictures would drop the appropriate announcements in time and assured them that they will be worth the wait. Pandiraj told, "Dear friends we understand ur curiosity about #Suriya40 . Pls don't believe rumors.  Production house will announce the cast & crew soon.we r working hard to give u the best". Apart from Suriya 40 and Navarasa, Suriya is also attached to director Vetri Maaran's Vaadivasal being produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu's V Creations, which as well marks the actor’s first-time association with the National Award-winning director.
