The Ministry of Earth Sciences and Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology signed a memorandum of understanding declaring the National Facility for Coastal and Marine Research, a centralized hub for blue biotechnology research. This pioneering facility at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology was dedicated by the Chancellor of the institute, Dr. Mariazeena Johnson, to the students and young researchers with support from the Ministry of Earth Sciences. It was declared by the Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Prof. Dr. M. Ravichandran, Dr. Ramadoss, Former Director, NIOT, with other dignitaries.
Following the signing of the MoU, the Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences said they expect many important innovations in ocean and blue biotechnology from the facility. It's a one-of-a-kind research facility in India with the latest technology in ocean and blue biotechnology, he added while addressing the media. He said research on sourcing raw materials for medicines and ways to increase omega-3 oil found in fish are set to happen in the facility.
The National Facility of Coastal and Marine Research organized the National Workshop on Blue Technology to mark the beginning. The workshop conducted on the 5th and 6th of July aims to find innovative solutions and sustainable practices in blue biotechnology that would be friendly for marine organisms. It is said that the workshop highlights the latest opportunities and advancements in blue technology and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals and the objectives of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
According to reports, the National Facility of Coastal and Marine Research at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology spans over 10,000 sq. ft. and boasts the latest technology. It is said that the facility is equipped with cutting-edge instruments and laboratories in marine research and conservation in India.
