India had received nearly 5 lakh antibody rapid testing kits from China last week. Differentiated into two kinds, IgM and IgG, the rapid testing kits were provided by Chinese companies namely Guangzhou Wondfo and Zhuhai Livzon and are said to be 70 percent more sensitive in virus detection and close to 80 percent in specificity, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The ICMR had on April 2 approved for the rapid testing kits to be used in locations across India showing more number of coronavirus positive cases, which have since been deemed as high containment zones.

The human body consists of two kinds of antibodies - immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG). The ICMR stated that a person infected with the infection will receive the IgM antibody within five to seven days while IgG arrives when the person has recovered. With testing being carried out across the nation using the rapid testing kits, Tamil Nadu had acquired around 24,000 kits in the first phase with the state government making an appeal to the central government requesting another 1.25 lakh testing kits, which are expected to be delivered in the upcoming days.

In the midst of this, the Greater Chennai Corporation has now released a video on their social networking pages announcing that testing across Chennai has begun while also explaining the functioning of a rapid testing kit in the detection of the COVID-19 virus, which was carried out at the Bharathi Women's College at Royapuram on April 19.
