Soorarai Pottru Paresh Rawal's strong statement against vulgar and double-meaning comedy films
In a year that has witnessed grief and tragedy for the most part due to the coronavirus pandemic, the release of a majority of films in theatres has not been a possibility. In that light, Suriya's Soorarai Pottru released this Diwali directly on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform is being celebrated as the film of the year by many fans, including those in the industry. Partly inspired by events from the life of Simplifly Deccan founder G. R. Gopinath, Soorarai Pottru directed by Sudha Kongara, while featuring music G. V. Prakash Kumar has been regarded as one of the most profound works of Suriya after many years. Apart from Suriya and the film's female lead Aparna Balamurali, including veteran actress Urvashi delivering knockout performances, Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal, who played the prime antagonist, has also been appreciated by fans and critics for his intense performance.
Paresh Rawal, a Padma Shri recipient, played the owner of JAZ Airlines and gave tough competition to Suriya's rival throughout the course of the Soorarai Pottru’s narrative. With the film still being lauded by many, the National Award-winning actor, who will next be seen in the upcoming Hindi film Coolie No 1, has in an interview spoken about vulgar and double-meaning comedy films that have come out in recent times. He goes on to explain how Coolie No 1, also coming out directly on Amazon Prime Video on December 25, steers away from falling under the category of being a double-meaning comedy film. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, the veteran actor said in Hindi, "These days, you can’t tell when a nude scene might show up in a movie, or if there’s going to be bad language." He further stated, "This is the first family entertainer that audiences can enjoy without worrying about all this. No one will have to leave the room out of embarrassment." Paresh added, "I believe in making things effortless. I simply hate vulgar and double-meaning type of comedy, and fortunately I’ve been able to stay away from those films."
Paresh Rawal then said how it is important for a film to make people laugh in a year that only reminds us of sorrow. "To be able to make people laugh in a year like this is very important," he states. Honoring writer Coolie No 1's writer Farhad Samji, the acclaimed actor further added saying, "He writes economically, and his words are juicy, boisterous and textured." Directed by hit Bollywood director David Dhawan, Coolie No 1 is a remake of his own 1995 film under the same title, which had Govinda and Karishma Kapoor in the lead roles and turned out to be a nationwide box office success.
