Former DMK MP K Arjunan kicks policeman after being asked to show e-pass

A video of former DMK MP K Arjunan seen hurling abuses and physically attacking an on-duty policeman at a check-post near Salem in Tamil Nadu is doing the rounds now on social media. According to reports, the incident had taken place on Sunday (June 28) after police personnel had stopped K Arjunan's car as part of their duty for the verification of e-pass, which has been made mandatory by the Central and state governments for travel around Tamil Nadu amid the lockdown imposed to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
In the video, ex-MP K Arjunan is seen getting upset after which he pushes the cop while verbally abusing him and then kicking him. In response, we see the policeman pushing K Arjunan once before other policemen and people there intervene to separate the two and break off the tussle that had erupted. Ever since the lockdown was imposed, it has been compulsory by the government for those traveling to carry an e-pass. Reports state, no case has been filed as yet. Tamil Nadu government had announced a complete lockdown in four districts namely Chennai, Chengalpet, Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur from June 19 to June 30 in order to stop the spread of coronavirus. District administration in Madurai too had announced a complete lockdown a few days later, which will carry on till June 30 in tandem with the above-mentioned four districts. There were 3,940 new COVID-19 cases with 54 deaths recorded in Tamil Nadu on Sunday with the state's total number of cases rising to 82,275. TN's death toll currently stands at 1,079 while the 1,443 recoveries were registered taking the total discharged count to 45,537. Chennai district continues to remain the worst-affected in Tamil Nadu as the number of cases has gone up to 53,762, which is nearly three-fourths of the cases recorded in the state.
