Warner Bros. has officially announced a sequel to Matt Reeves' critically acclaimed crime thriller The Batman. Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich shared the news at CinemaCon 2022, and while nothing further was revealed as far as plot or release window, we now officially know a sequel is on its way. Reeves came on stage to help announce The Batman saying, “I’m excited to jump back in for another chapter”, promising more news at a CinemaCon to come.
In addition to Reeves returning to write and direct once again and though no specifications were made, Toby Emmerich also revealed that the whole team will be returning. To no surprise, this got the fans of the latest take on the Caped Crusader going gaga over this exciting news. Reeves and his team have always been expected to return to this world with these characters but were waiting to see if the audience would turn out to see the movie, which they most definitely did which resulted in it being a massive hit at the box office — generating a whopping $759 million globally and counting.
There has been no revelation regarding what story the film will follow, but considering how The Batman ended, it is only human to assume that the Joker could play a role in the upcoming sequel. The film could further dwell deep and explore the Penguin, Catwoman, and even the Riddler for all we know since they all survived the original film.
In the meantime, it has also been confirmed that a spinoff show about the Penguin from this universe is in the works. And that is not all but Warner Bros. has many other DC films lined up too. DC League of Super-Pets, Black Adam, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are all scheduled for a theatrical release soon in the months to come.
