The elections for Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) finally took place in Chennai on November 22 at the Dr MGR Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women, Adyar after there was no elected body of representatives for over a year. With the TFPC elections held on Sunday in a smooth manner and as many as 1,050 votes being reportedly cast, the results were announced on Monday, with Murali Ramasamy of Thenandal Films being declared the winner with 557 votes. Multi-talented veteran director-producer-actor T. Rajendar has lost his position and had secured a total of 388 votes, while reputed producer PL Thenappan garnered 87 votes. Reports say actors namely Rajinikanth, Dhanush, director Bharathiraja, producer AVM Saravanan, singer SP Charan did not cast their votes.
The stage for battle in this year's Tamil Film Producers Council was primarily between T Rajendar and Murali Ramasamy of Sri Thenandal Films, while PL Thenappan contested as an independent candidate. It is to be noted that a large number of producers in September separated to form the Tamil Film Active Producers’ Association (TFAPA) with director Bharathiraja chosen as its President. Actor Karunas after casting his vote in the TFPC elections expressed his dissatisfaction at director Bharathiraja’s decision to form the TFAPA. Later, Bharathiraja issued a clarification stating that the TFAPA was formed not with the purpose of splitting the existing TFPC, but had been set up with a view of protecting the interests of active producers who have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. It is to be noted that a cash-for-votes scandal had broken out on election day, with allegations levelled against T Rajender’s camp.
In 2019, the Tamil Nadu government appointed a Special Officer to oversee the council's functioning and operations after conflicts within several members of the TFPC had surfaced to the forefront with the previous opposition staging protests, while locking the office premises and pushing their demands for the immediate resignation of the then President Vishal. Election Officer M Jayachandran was appointed by the Madras High Court to oversee the conduct of fair elections that came to an end at 4PM on November 22, 2020.
