For a while now, biopics have taken centre stage in Bollywood and other regional film industries, with films being made on sporting superstars. The most prominent biopics to have been made on Indian cricketers include M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story starring late actor Sushant Singh Rajput and Azhar based on former captain Mohammad Azharuddin in 2016 and Sachin: A Billion Dreams in 2017. In that light, another biopic has now been confirmed by none other than iconic cricketer and current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, who during an interaction to News18 revealed that discussions are ongoing for a film to be made on his life.
Ganguly said, "Yes, I have agreed to the biopic. It will be in Hindi but it is not possible to say the name of the director now. It will take a few more days for arranging everything." According to reports, the former Indian captain has recommended Ranbir Kapoor's name to portray him in the biopic inspired from his life, with the film being planned to be developed on a huge scale under a leading banner. Fans will know that Ranbir had previously appeared in the Sanjay Dutt biopic titled Sanju in 2018, which went on to become a nationwide box office blockbuster. The Ganguly biopic will be the next big film coming from Bollywood on a cricket superstar as the upcoming '83 is yet to release, which is based on India’s 1983 cricket World Cup victory and has Ranveer Singh essaying the role of former captain Kapil Dev. Likewise, Taapsee Pannu is also playing the role of Indian women's national cricket team captain Mithali Raj in Shabaash Mithu.
Excitement for the Sourav Ganguly biopic is massive considering this is the first time the cricketer has openly acknowledged a film being made on his life. In the past, Ganguly had denied reports of a biopic based on his life, including last year when the news of Hrithik Roshan portraying the 'Prince Of Bengal' on the big screen came about. All sights are now on who will lead the Ganguly biopic's cast, including details on the director and the production banner.
