'Superstar' Rajinikanth first announced his entry into politics on December 31, 2017 when he addressed his fans and followers at a public meeting in Chennai saying, "Naan arasiyal ku varuvadhu urudhi", leaving many ecstatic. Earlier this year, the veteran actor said that he would not be contesting for the Chief Minister designation in the upcoming 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, but added that he will be a bridge to a new generation in politics. Having said that, Rajinikanth has now informed his fans and followers on his Twitter page that his political party will be launched in January 2021, with an announcement on December 31, 2020.
Rajinikanth tweeted, "In the upcoming 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, with the blessings of the people, a honest, fair, corruption-free, transparent and a secular spiritual politics will be created for sure. Wonder... Miracle... will occur !!!" Rajinikanth's tweet also included the hashtags, "we will change, we will change everything" and "if not now, never". It is to be noted that Rajinikanth had recently met the office bearers of his Rajini Makkal Mandram at Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam on November 30.

Rajinikanth in his discussion with the leaders of the Rajini Makkal Mandram, including district secretaries, is said to have discussed the pros and cons of beginning a political party in the current situation. It is also being stated that the executives in the Rajini Makkal Mandram had insisted that Rajinikanth would be the Chief Minister candidate in case nobody else stepped forward to take up the candidature.
During the meeting, Rajinikanth had queried the Rajini Makkal Mandram members with many questions including why they believed he should begin a political party and contest in the upcoming 2021 TN elections. Stalin, an office bearer from Thoothukudi, had later addressed the media saying many among them had expressed their concerns over the actor's health, while some others requested him to announce his political party.
Rajinikanth's entry in politics in Tamil Nadu has been a subject of debate for many years, with observers, political analysts, film personalities and fans taking note of the various political undertones in his films. Speculations of Rajinikanth's political entry gathered steam after the actor’s one-liner during the 1996 Assembly Elections when he said, "Even God can't save Tamil Nadu if Jayalalithaa came back to power". Many have stated that his statement back then assisted the DMK-TMC alliance to win the 1996 election.
