Blockbuster Tamil filmmaker Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan: Part One has been announced for a worldwide theatrical release on September 30. Produced jointly by Lyca Productions and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies banners and featuring music by Academy Award-winning composer A. R. Rahman, the upcoming epic historical fiction film adapted into two installments from acclaimed Tamil writer Kalki Krishnamurthy's novel of the same name will be a pan-Indian release coming out in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada. Ponniyin Selvan: Part One has an incredible power-packed star cast featuring the likes of 'Chiyaan' Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Trisha forming the main leads. Some other stars in the film are Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, Sarath Kumar, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Jayachithra, Rahman, Vikram Prabhu, Ashwin Kakamanu, Vijay Yesudas, Lal, Nasser, Kishore, Nizhalgal Ravi, Riyaz Khan, Mohan Ram, Arjun Chidambaram, Vinodhini, Balaji Sakthivel and Parthiban forming the ensemble supporting cast.
An official press release for Ponniyin Selvan: Part One has been released and sheds light on the film's story:
"The story is set in the 10th century during a tumultuous time in the Chola Empire when the power struggle between different branches of the ruling family caused violent rifts between the potential successors to the reigning emperor. It is an adventure story where brave soldiers, cunning spies, and evil schemers all try to win the empire for themselves. A civil war becomes imminent until the scores can be settled. All this political and military turmoil leads to the Cholas becoming the most prosperous and powerful empire in the continent and one of the most successful and long-reigning in history."
