Legendary Bengali filmmaker and poet, Buddhadeb Dasgupta breathed his last in the early hours of Thursday, June 10. According to reports, Buddhadeb was suffering from a kidney problem. He was 77 years old. Buddhadeb Dasgupta's death is a big loss to the Indian cinema and condolence messages have been pouring in on social media. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his official Twitter page to share his condolence statement. Narendra Modi's tweet read, "Anguished by the demise of Shri Buddhadeb Dasgupta. His diverse works struck a chord with all sections of society. He was also an eminent thinker and poet. My thoughts are with his family and several admirers in this time of grief. Om Shanti".
Similarly, West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee also shared her heartfelt statement on Buddhadeb's unfortunate demise. Talking about him, she tweeted, "Saddened at the passing away of eminent filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta. Through his works, he infused lyricism into the language of cinema. His death comes as a great loss for the film fraternity. Condolences to his family, colleagues and admirers". The fans are also mourning the legendary filmmaker's demise on social media. Buddhadeb was a celebrated filmmaker and poet who majorly worked in Bengali cinema. Five of Buddhadeb's films have won National Film Award for Best Film - Bagh Bahadur (1989), Charachar (1993), Lal Darja (1997), Mondo Meyer Upakhyan (2002), Kaalpurush (2008).
Buddhadeb has also won the National Film Award for Best Director for two of his movies - Uttara (2000) and Swapner Din (2005). Buddhadeb Dasgupta's notable poetry works include Govir Araley, Coffin Kimba Suitcase, Himjog, Chhaata Kahini, Roboter Gaan, Sreshtha Kabita, and more.
Buddhadeb Dasgupta's younger daughter is Alokananda Dasgupta, who is one of the promising music composers in Hindi cinema. Some of her notable works as a music director include BA Pass, Fandry, Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa, Trapped. Alokananda also composed the background score for Amazon Prime's Breathe web series (starring Madhavan), and Netflix's Sacred Games (1st season).
