Over the past few years, Tamil cinema has been witnessing a new wave of filmmakers arrive and set their footprints with their films and two names that have stood out in the last five years are Lokesh Kanagaraj and H. Vinoth. Both Lokesh Kanagaraj and H. Vinoth have risen to the top of the league in quick time by landing projects that feature leading superstars after they made heads in the Tamil film industry with their initial films, which still continue to be talked about in high regard by fans. Each of the directors have made six films to date between them and all have fared performed on the commercial front, including landing massive critical acclaim.
Among the two, H. Vinoth entered Tamil cinema first in 2014 with his directorial debut, Sathuranga Vettai, which saw cinematographer Natarajan Subramaniam aka. Natty being introduced as the hero, with the film turning out to be a hit at the box office and immense praises coming the filmmaker's way for his gripping and tight screenplay and was subsequently awarded the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Storywriter. He then followed it up with Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru starring Karthi in 2017, which was based on the Operation Bawaria incident, with the film turning out to be a blockbuster at the box office. H. Vinoth once again proved his writing skills with the film, which showed the level of research he had put in the screenplay. His next was the bigge, Nerkonda Paarvai, and was an official remake of the smash hit Bollywood film, Pink, with Ajith Kumar portraying legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan's character as an advocate. The Tamil version of the courtroom drama was lauded by critics and fans alike and set the expectations a notch higher for the filmmaker's next, Valimai, and once again with 'Thala' Ajith, which wrapped up production earlier this week with all sights set on the film's release later this year.
Coming to Lokesh Kanagaraj, the flamboyant filmmaker started off his career in the Tamil film industry by directing a segment titled Kalam in Karthik Subbaraj's anthology Aviyal in 2016. He next made his full-length feature film directorial debut with Maanagaram in 2017, with the film turning out to be a success commercially, including garnering massive critical acclaim. He was complimented for his tightly-packaged screenplay that saw many twists and turns, with the film recently being announced to be remade in Hindi under the title Mumbaikar with Santosh Sivan as the director. Lokesh then landed his first big film with Karthi in 2019, Kaithi, which turned out to be one of the biggest box office blockbusters of the year, with praises once again coming the director's way. It was during the shooting of Kaithi that Lokesh Kanagaraj got the nod from 'Thalapathy' Vijay to direct Master, which hit theatres this Pongal and also featured 'Makkal Selvan' Vijay Sethupathi as the antagonist. Lokesh has been commended for penning a screenplay that gave both superstars ample space to score with their performances in a story that kept audiences hooked to the end, with Master turning out to be one of the biggest blockbusters in Vijay's career.
As H. Vinoth will next be heading to work on the post-production of Ajith's Valimai and Lokesh Kanagaraj currently laying the groundwork for the production of his next with 'Ulaganayagan' Kamal Haasan for the film Vikram, both directors recently caught up with each other and their sudden surprise meeting is now the talk of the town. Although H. Vinoth stays away from social media, Lokesh Kanagaraj on Thursday took to his Twitter page to share a picture of them relaxing and catching up. The picture of the two new-gen directors has taken social media by storm, with fans looking forward to more from them. Check it out below:
