Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kochadaiiyaan was India's first photorealistic motion capture film and it was directed by Rajinikanth's daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth. Veteran director K.S.Ravikumar penned the story, screenplay and dialogues of the film and his writing was one of the major positives for the film. Post the release of Kochadaiiyaan, many people felt that had the film been made as live action, it would have been mega grand and appealed to the fans in a more impactful way.
Having said that, director K.S.Ravikumar, in his recent interaction with Galatta Media, revealed the process of how Kochadaiiyaan materialized. He said that they had to make the film in animation due to Rajinikanth's health condition at that time. Surprisingly, Ravikumar said that Rana is yet to be shot and it can be made anytime.
He said, "Even before Kochadaiiyaan, it was Rana which was started initially. Since Rajini sir had some health issues, he went to Singapore for medical treatment and after returning, we were informed that he had to take rest. The Doctors told that Rajini sir shouldn’t go for any outdoor shoot for a year and that is when we decided to do an animation film, so that we can shoot in an air conditioned studio making his comfort the first priority.
When this was the situation, I thought why not make a prequel to Rana and that is how I created the character of Kochadaiiyaan, the father of Rana and Sena. Rajini sir liked the idea. After the release, many people told us and even Rajini sir, for that matter, told that had Kochadaiiyaan been shot as a live action film, it would have been grandeur and massive in all terms.
The impact would have been huge and the fans would have enjoyed much more. Even today, Rana is still pending. Anytime, it can happen. It may materialize. When Rajini sir is ready, maybe, we can do that film. Rana’s story is written by Rajini sir, and I built the screenplay. The original idea was his.”
Wow! Sounds interesting right? It would definitely be exciting if Rana is made as a live-action film in the coming years. The fans would surely enjoy it and it will be a landmark film in Indian cinema. Well, let us keep our fingers crossed and wait for the right time.
