The first spinoff film to come out of the global blockbuster Fast & Furious franchise, Hobbs & Shaw, centered around Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw characters, went on to become a massive box office success across the world having taken home over $760 million. Although Hobbs & Shaw released last year didn't get favorable reviews from the critics, the action, humor and entertainment offered along with the combined star power of Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham along with Idris Elba and an ensemble cast featuring names like Helen Mirren, Vanessa Kirby, Roman Reigns among others propelled it to glory.
Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson had confirmed during an Instagram Q&A session that a sequel to Hobbs & Shaw is indeed in development and the creative team behind the first film are actively working on figuring out the direction to take the characters forward. Dwayne stated, "We are developing now the next film, the next [Hobbs & Shaw] movie, and I’m pretty excited about it. Just gotta figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going to go,". He further extended his gratitude towards fans for making the film a box office hit saying they were the reason for the first Hobbs and Shaw film end up being "a huge success".
As for the Fast & Furious franchise, the next big release, F9, was supposed to hit screens this May, but has been postponed to April 2021 owing to the coronavirus pandemic, which has since led to many Hollywood studios to reshuffle the release dates of their films. F9 would see Vin Diesel facing off against his brother, who in the not long back released trailer, was revealed to be none other than WWE superstar, John Cena.
