Richard Rishi’s Draupathi is the current talk of the town, thanks to its controversial content. The film got a good opening at the box office for the obvious reasons which are better not to be told. With a very good buzz among the mainstream general audience, Draupathi collected around 2.5 crores in Tamil Nadu on its first day. Following that, the opening weekend box office collections of this socio-political drama has now been revealed and it is indeed huge! According to reports online, Draupathi has collected an approximate gross of around 6.9 - 7.2 crores in Tamil Nadu in its first three days (February 28 - March 1) in Tamil Nadu and it has taken everyone by surprise.
Collecting around 7 crores in Tamil Nadu in the opening weekend is a no mean task and these figures are the reflection of the film’s buzz among the mainstream general audience. As far as the Chennai city box office is concerned, Dulquer Salmaan’s Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal has topped the list and Draupathi holds the second place. But, Draupathi has managed to do really well in other parts of Tamil Nadu, especially in the B and C centres and that is the reason behind these huge numbers in the box office.
The film is said to have been made on a very low budget of somewhere close to 1 crore and it has already entered the profit zone for the theatre exhibitors and distributors. Well, it looks like the controversial content has helped the film gaining more buzz and visibility. The film talks about various topics including fake marriages, caste-based politics, inter-caste marriage issues, farmers issues, and so on.
Directed by Mohan G, Draupathi features Tolet and Kumbalangi Nights fame Sheela Rajkumar as the female lead and Karunaas in an extended cameo. This socio-political film has music scored by Jibin, while Manoj Narayan and Devaraj have handled the cinematography and editing departments respectively.
