Leading Tamil actor Dhanush has won the Best Actor award at the BRICS Film Festival, which was held alongside the 52nd edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The actor was awarded the honor for his performance in director Vetri Maaran's 2019 film Asuran and shared the joyous news on Twitter on Monday. He tweeted, "An absolute honour." Dhanush's performance in Asuran has been hailed by critics and fans for his powerful and emotional performance as a doting father, with the film also marking his fourth successful collaboration with Vetri Maaran after their previous ventures like Polladhavan, Aadukalam and Vada Chennai. Asuran was produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu under his V Creations banner, with the film turning out to be a raging box office success and also entered the 100 crore club. The film, which dealt with the love of a father for his son, who get caught in a web of caste-related atrocities, also had chart-buster songs composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar and included a thunderous background score. Asuran, based on Tamil writer Poomani's novel titled Vekkai, also starred Malayalam actress Manju Warrier as the female lead, with Ken Karunas, Teejay Arunasalam, Prakash Raj, Pasupathi, Ammu Abhirami, Aadukalam Naren, Balaji Sakthivel, Nithish Veera among others cast in pivotal roles.
Vetri Maaran's Asuran was also screened at the 78th Golden Globe Awards under the Best Foreign Film Category, with the film also recently getting a remake in Telugu under the title Narappa, which had Venkatesh Daggubati and Priyamani in lead roles. The BRICS Film Festival also saw Lara Boldorini receive the Best Actor (female) award for her performance in the Brazilian film, On Wheels, while the African film Barakat and Russian film, The Sun Above Me Never Sets, were jointly awarded the Best Film Award.
