TASMAC liquor outlets in Chennai city and its suburbs could be reopening soon since the lockdown was imposed and the first signs for its resumption are now visible. Wooden barricades have been put up outside the liquor shops in many places across the city for crowd management along with the outlets being given a fresh coat of paint. Among the shops that were noticed that received the new revamp were the one in Little Mount, Saidapet where a long barricade was erected while one another was removed after being put up outside shop no 518 in Kodambakkam.
All 330 TASMAC outlets in the core of the city were ordered to be shut down as any other business when the nation went into lockdown on March 25, but some shops in Chennai and South Central look to be well on their way to be reopened soon. It is estimated that about 12 crores in revenue will be generated once the state-run liquor shops reopen. The Chennai zone, which includes the city, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts, collectively account for around 25% of the state's total income through liquor from the estimated 900 shops in these four districts. As of now, the state is said to be earning around 100 crore every day in the remaining 4,400+ liquor shops.
Accoding to reports, the outlets in localities bordering Chennai and beyond Greater Chennai Police's limits, which includes Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts could be reopening on June 8. As of now, the liquor is said to have been stocked with officials waiting for an approval from the government to begin sale. Having said that, the barricade removed at the Kodambakkam TASMAC outlet after being put up raises questions as to whether they will indeed reopen and it now remains to be seen what decision the Tamil Nadu government takes next regarding the matter considering there has also been a huge surge in the number of coronavirus cases popping up all over Chennai city, which at present is the worst-affected part of the state.
