James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel Avatar: The Way of Water has landed a coveted release at the China box office. the film will hit the screens on December 16, just as it does in rest of the world everywhere. Avatar 2 is now one of the few movies in Hollywood to have taken a place in the Chinese market ever since the start of the pandemic. The market in China is so big that it contributes a majority of the revenue raked in.

This could be clearly seen with Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder which was banned from the country due to its portrayal of LGBTQ content. Due to this reason, the film did not fare well because of which it did not gross all that much in the box office. This clearly shows the power of the Chinese market as they are considered the major consumers. With that market tapped now, Avatar: The Way of Water is bound to do impressively well and cash in big numbers.

Avatar 2 will be played in normal and well as in IMAX format in theatres which expands the range of screens it will be covering. The film's move into China have been in the works for weeks with the official announcement coming only a few days after the announcement that Bob Iger will return to run the Walt Disney Co. as its CEO. Disney inherited the Avatar franchise after Iger engineered a deal to acquire much of Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox, including the movie studio 20th Century Fox.

James Cameron’s upcoming sequel is coming to theaters worldwide nearly 13 years after its 2009 prequel film Avatar. Avatar made history by becoming the highest grossing film in history and it continues wearing that crown even today. Avatar: The Way of Water is said to have been made on a whopping budget of around $350 million to $400 million, making it the most expensive film ever to be made.
