After months and months of waiting, we are finally closing in on Thalapathy Vijay's highly anticipated film Beast with just over 3 weeks to go. The film is all set to hit the screens on April 13 and the excitement is uncontainable because of all the hype around it. After Ajith's Valimai, it is Vijay's turn to steal the spotlight and outshine everyone. But this is not the first time Thalapathy's film is being released in April as it has been done several other times before. There is no reason behind this but just an unexplained coincidence that we have noticed happen over the years. So let us look at 8 such films of Vijay that also got an April release:
1) MAANBUMIGU MAANAVAN:
The film follows Shiva, a happy-go-lucky guy, who helps two of his best friends get married, much to the dismay of their parents; when the girl gets raped by Madan, the son of a politician, Shiva, with the help of his friends, plans to bring him to justice. The film came out on 12 April 1996 and ran for more than 50 days in theatres across Tamil Nadu. The film ended as a decent hit at the box office and established Vijay as a mass hero.
2) NINAITHEN VANDHAAI:
The film revolves around Gokulan who sees a woman in his dream and is determined to find her but complications arise when he finally meets the lady soon after his father gets him engaged to another woman. The film was released on 10 April 1998 to positive reviews and became a commercial success at the box office.
3) BADRI:
When Vennela accuses Badri of not loving her sincerely, she challenges him that no one can love him as she does. However, their lives take a turn when Badri meets Sarayu and who falls madly in love with him. The film had its theatrical release on 12 April 2001. The film completed 100 days theatrical run and received a positive response becoming a commercially successful venture at the box office.
4) TAMIZHAN:
The film revolves around Surya, an honest lawyer who firmly believes in the legal system. In his fight for justice, he loses his sister and brother-in-law but continues nevertheless. The film was released on 12 April 2002 and received mixed reviews, turning out to be an average venture at the box office.
5) GHILLI:
Velu is an aspiring Kabaddi player who goes to Madurai to participate in one of the regional matches where he ends up rescuing Dhanalakshmi from Muthupandi, a powerful man keen on marrying the girl against her wishes. The film was released on 17 April 2004 to generally positive reviews. It ran for more than 200 days at the box office and became a commercial success ad was eventually considered to be one of his breakthrough films in Vijay's career.
6) SACHEIN:
The film tells the story of Sachein and Shalini, two college classmates who become good friends. But when Sachein eventually expresses his love for Shalini, she rejects it; in response, Vijay confidently tells her that she will fall in love with him in 30 days. The film was released on 14 April 2005 and was an average at the box office, as it had released along with Superstar Rajinikanth's Chandramukhi. However, Sachein is a film that holds a special place in the hearts of the fans and is considered to be a film that showed the lighter and fun-loving side of the actor.
7) SURA:
When a corrupt politician named Samuthira Raja, tries to seize the villagers' land, Sura, a brave and powerful fisherman, sets out to fight against him. The film released worldwide on 30 April 2010. The film, unfortunately, was a failure at the box office, missing to strike a chord with the audiences.
8) THERI:
The film follows DCP Vijaya Kumar, who goes into hiding in order to bring up his daughter in a safe environment. However, when her life is threatened by deadly gangsters, he must face his past to protect his daughter. The film had a worldwide release on 14 April 2016 and received mixed to positive reviews from the fans, audience who praised the cast's performances, action sequences and direction but criticised the story. Theri was a big success at the box office.
