It was a moment to remember for all who had been present in Supriyo Bandyopadhyay's road to recovery after he tested positive for the novel coronavirus a day after his wedding on June 3. Surpiyo, a civic volunteer in his 20s, had recovered from coronavirus after treatment and had tested negative on Sunday (June 14). After his bride, Piyali, had to step into their marital home for the first time without her groom, he had plenty to celebrate this time upon his recovery according to the superintendent of the hospital at Fuleswar, Subhasis Mitra who said, "Every medical staff - from the doctor to the nurses and other health workers of the hospital allayed the man's fears. He recovered after sustained treatment and tested negative,".
The hospital management then made arrangements for a grand send-off for Mr. Supriyo with the district health department and the families of the bride and groom on Tuesday. Everybody took part in recreating the wedding ceremony once again for the man, who hailed from Dasnagar in Howrah district. The ceremony saw him wearing a "dhoti" and "punjabi" (kurta) and walking alongside his wife, who was seen in a red Banarasi saree amidst the sound of conch shells blowing and the hospital medical staff celebrating their union. The occasion also saw West Bengal minister Nirmal Majhi grace the proceedings to bless the newly wed couple.
Piyali, who hails from Masat in Hooghly district, was left with a loss of words at the unexpected turn of events as she had no idea the medical staff would go to such lengths to make their wedding happen without any obligations. Later, Mr Supriyo while addressing reporters said, "I was initially scared after learning that I am infected with coronavirus. But I was reassured by the officer-in-charge of Dasnagar police station, with which I am attached, and the doctors of the hospital." He added, "I am grateful to everyone for being by my side at the hour of crisis. I hope to return to work soon after the mandatory 14-day home quarantine is over," he said. Hospital Superintendent Subhasis Mitra then spoke saying Mr. Supriyo has been advised rest for two weeks, but can complete his wedding rituals at home and stay with his family as he has now been confirmed negative for coronavirus. He added saying the hospital has seen over 200 coronavirus positive patients getting cured and discharged ever since the COVID-19 outbreak.
